Men Need Respect and Women Need Love

That’s the overarching theme of the book Love and Respect. I had seen it advertised and finally bought it for my Kindle app. I have been reading it over the past few weeks and every page is spot on.

Men need respect as much as ladies need love. The author said that many marriage books are about the man taking the lead and learning to love his wife, but they rarely delve into the opposite idea of the wife respecting the man.

The author calls it the crazy cycle: When a man feels disrespected by his wife, he lashes back in an unloving way. The wife then feels hurt and responds disrespectfully. This cycle continues forever unless one of them breaks it the Bible way.

The man is commanded to love his wife, but the wife is not commanded to love him in return. That’s because she is created to love. Instead, she is commanded to reverence, or respect, him.

Part of the Gender Series that Pastor Wayne Hardy of Bible Baptist Church in Stillwater, OK, preached related the truth that man and woman were created in God’s image. Not only did they (and we, by implication) bear God’s image through being human, but through being male and female (Gen. 1:27). Part of the curse after their fall was that Eve’s “desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.” Gen. 3:16. Her struggle would not be to love, but to respect and honor his position.

Love and Respect is a phenominal, easy-to-read book on marriage, written from a former pastor’s perspective. You would enjoy it if it didn’t hurt so much while reading it.
