Well, today’s video is going to be interesting to about six of you, probably, but I wanted to show our church what happens behind the scenes at church in a typical week. That is why I am dressed in paint clothes today; we were painting part of the church back here. You might think, “What do our interns do all week? What could possibly keep them busy? Do we really have all that much to do?” I wanted to share a list with you that we shared with our church just last week. Here is the Wednesday night handout at our church, where I gave a whole list of the things our interns have been doing. They read a bunch of books. They repaired a floor drain at the church, replaced a thermostat, repaired the chain-link fence, went on some visits with me, and did a bunch of yard sale pickups. They have both preached several times already. They have been on visits with guests and church members, hung parking lot banners, fixed the church van, and all that kind of stuff. I want to go into even more detail. That is why I said it is probably not super interesting to everybody, but for those who are interested, here is something I think can be helpful. There is so much more that our church staff does that is more spiritual in nature, more than just projects, but we do store up a lot of our projects for the summer interns, and when they arrive, especially this summer, man, they have been getting after it. They have been clicking through our projects. We use a system called Trello, and I am going to go through that in a little bit. If you are new here, my name is Pastor Ryan Rench, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Temecula. Yesterday and today we were doing some painting. Our buildings are about twenty years old here, at least this area in the back that we were painting. This is on the way back to our missions department, and we want to make sure that the missions department is looking really, really good. Otherwise our church members may not even know the missions department is back there. We wanted to repaint that whole area so that when people walk back there, it looks really, really nice. That was just one example of the projects we have been working on and that we do in a typical week.
The Trello Board
So I want to share our Trello board. This is the list I started to show on the Wednesday night handout. Trello is just online software. It has these lists that scroll left and right. There are different categories of lists, but here is the list of done things: 2025 interns. We only use this Trello board when the summer staff is here. I like having a place where I can just throw projects on and know they will get to them. So here are some of the things they have done. Replace the flickering light. Fix the pastor’s flickering light; there were all kinds of light issues they were dealing with in weeks one and two. This back-of-the-church project was the one they worked on this past couple of weeks, so here is the checklist they were following, the parts they were ordering from Lowe’s, and all the prep work that went into it. That was the last couple of days. The gutters out front were replaced. The brick that had been broken for a couple of years, and had even been replaced with a broken brick, was fixed. They removed gum from the sidewalks. Changed lights in the office hallway. More lights. Cleaning the buildings. Repairing the baptistry room and changing the curtain. More lights. Tightening the sanctuary double-door hinges. Tightening the screws in the Teens of Faith room. Changing the light in the Teens of Faith room. More fixing of the pastor’s can lights. Organizing the maintenance shed, replacing thermostats, building a ramp for our golf cart, fixing the exit signs and the cages around those emergency exit lights, painting these black railings, fixing the hole a homeless person cut in our chain-link fence, repainting the handicap stripes, removing the dirt pile the moles had dug up underneath there. Fixing the paint by the stairwell light; they had to do some repairs after changing some of the lights in that area. Changing the vents. Cleaning the church steeple; that was one they just found and took the lead on, and I appreciated that very much last week. They fixed the railing on the platform; there is a safety rail that had come loose over the last couple of years, and they fixed that. Some of our carpet tiles were coming up, and they fixed those. Clearing the rain gutters of leaves and pine needles. Cleaning the red paint off the curb and sidewalk from when the surveyors came out and messed up our sidewalks. Sweeping the front porch. Changing the downstairs hall lights. I am telling you, we had a whole bunch of lights burned out, apparently. Washing the outside windows. There is another light list; maybe some of these were duplicates, but at least they are all captured and fixed now. Fixing the pool table. Fixing the stairs. Removing the pile of dirt that was out in the parking lot for who knows how long. It was out of sight and out of mind, so it probably sat there for quite a long time after some repairs to our irrigation. Hanging the parking lot banners; those are some beautiful new banners out in our parking lots now. I love that. LED lights throughout the church, just slowly updating, not the ones that are burned out, but making sure everything is up to LED. Fixing this little patch of dead grass that had been there for a couple of years. So those are at least the ones they have been tracking and making sure they have written down, not counting all the things that were not necessarily written down, just taking care of all the little issues. This Trello board also has the unlock and lockup procedures and other projects we have. If a volunteer comes in, there are some things we will add on there that they could get to. There are big projects and little projects. We still need some more painting; there is still some touch-up. There are still issues with the backdrop between the paper towel holders, and there is still some pressure washing that needs to be done, and some fixing of the fountains, and maybe projects like building stairs, painting the staff house porch, and putting in dimmable can lights. With twenty thousand square feet of buildings around here, there is always something to do, and if it is not indoors, then it is outdoors, on the five acres. I appreciate the regular work Dr. Welsh does on our grounds. He takes care of the mowing and the bush trimming and all of that every single week, but outside the scope of the hours and hours he puts in every week, even more projects come up, or at least pile up, that we say we will get to some other time.
So this is just a short video today, a short update answering that question: What do the interns do all week while they are here at church? What are some of the projects they have been working on? What does the church staff do all week besides watch YouTube videos? Well, this is part of it, and these are some of the projects going on. We always have room for more help. If you are interested in helping out, as you can see, there is no shortage of projects. That is for sure. Well, God bless you, and we will see you in the next video. Thank you for watching. We will see you in the next one.
