Are You an Associate Pastor?

Are you an associate pastor, too?

You might be in the same boat as me… with the infamous title of “Associate Pastor.” Bless you.

Most people wonder what in the world we do all day! I, for one, do nothing except play games.

Not true.

As Associate Pastors, our job title is nebulous. It changes from city to city, from church to church, and from day to day. If we have a job description, it includes a lot of things.

I’m coming from the only perspective that I know: mine. That’s what this blog is about. My church runs about 300 on Sundays. My dad is the founding pastor, and, for a while, we were the only two on full-time staff. In 2015, we hired a church secretary.

So, being a small staff with a fairly big facility and a robust ministry, we stay busy! My jobs are always different, which is why I love what I do. I’m already scatterbrained, er… well-rounded, that is… and I love the variety that life offers. Church ministry on a small staff offers all the interests a man could ever want.

I dabble in learning and doing everything from web design, graphics and networking (IT) to management, leadership and people-development. I run the Teens of Faith and am the Music Director. I’m a wannabe author, a so-so preacher, a get-it-done event planner, and a delegator of all things possible. Maintenance days sometimes include all aspects of building construction, sprinkler systems, electrician and janitorial duties.

Some things I don’t do often are children’s ministries, the finances, or ladies meetings (thankfully!), among a ton of other stuff. Our church is led by many godly people who oversee several ministries that I have no part in overseeing, including military outreach, discipleship, orchestra, and much more.

I’m great at NONE of these things. Sadly, they all interest me.

The welcome message says it all. I’ve been called scatterbrained. But I prefer well-rounded. It makes me feel better about not being able to focus on one thing in my poor, poor life.

What can I say? I love what I do!

I’d love to hear from you and connect.
